rasi rresent ruture i BRIEFS Auburn University trustees approve tuition, fee boosts MONTGOMERY -r-Auburn University trustees approved increasing the school's tuition and athletic fees Friday, a move that will cost most students an extra $410ayear. Trustees approved a 2 percent tuition increase that would increase in-state tuition from $5,278 to $5,496 in 2006-07. Non-Alabama undergraduates would pay 1 5,496 next year, up from 1 4,878. The increase is to help pay for building maintenance. They also approved a large athletic fee increase, raising it from $36 to 1 92 per year.

The athletic fee increase was the first at Auburn since 1990. A 2 percent tuition increase' also was approved for Auburn University Montgomery, with in-state undergraduatespaying $4,500, up from 1 0 this year. Nonresident undergraduates will pay $13,500, up from $13,230. The changes were approved with one unanimous voice vote, said David Granger, a university spokesman. A Citronelle couple, Tim and Sharon Helveston, were among families who pushed the Alabama Legislature to approve the bill, which Gov. Bob Riley plans to sign into law Monday. Riley met Friday with the Helvestons and two other families in Mobile. The bill's sponsor, -Rep. Spencer Collier, R-Bayou La Batre, and several other area legislators attended the ceremony.

The bill is called the "Brody Act" in memory of the unborn son of 23-year-old Brandy Parker of Albertville. Parker was eight months pregnant when she was shot and killed on July 27. Choose Honoring Supreme Court judge from Alabama irks state high court justice MONTGOMERY Hugo Black still is controversial in his home state 35-years after his death, with state Supreme Court Justice Tom Parker criticizing the Alabama State Bar for inducting the former U.S. Supreme Court justice into its hall of fame Friday.
