Calhoun County's first K-12 supervisor of instruction dies By Jennifer Ginsberg Star Staff Writer Past co-workers say Dorothy Ann Wagnon McCullars was the type of person who could get along with anyone and make people feel at ease. "She was one of the finest Christian ladies I've ever known, said Dan Henderson, former superintendent of the Calhoun County Schools where McCullars worked for around 40 McCullars years. "She could find the good in anyone." Mrs. McCullars, Calhoun County's first supervisor of instruction for K-12, died Tuesday at her home. She was 82.

"I remember her big smile," said Rita Dunaway, a teacher at Wellborn Elementary who worked with Mrs. McCullars for almost 10 years. "She was always positive and always Many co-workers considered Mrs. McCullars a mentor. "She was a wonderful educator.

The elementary teachers adored her," said 1 Ann Holbrook who worked with Mrs. McCullars. "She was not only a coworker, but also a counselor, mentor and friend," said Henderson, who had known Mrs. McCullars for 40 years. "She was one of the best supervisors I've ever worked with." Services for Mrs.

McCullars of Ohatchee will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Oak Bowery Baptist Church in Ohatchee with the Revs. John Clark and Whitt Hibbs officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel. Burial will be in Crook Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Sherron McCullars and Richard "Dick" Pritchett of Ohatchee; a grandson, Brad Pritchett of Birmingham; and several nieces, nephews and sisters-inlaw. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. "Hut" McCullars. Pallbearers will be Bill Gray. Mark McCullars, Joey McCullars, Warren McCullars, Bill Smith and Bo Smith.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Oak Bowery Baptist Church. Mrs. McCullars was a native of Etowah County and had lived in Calhoun County most of her life. She was a classroom teacher at Woodstock Elementary and Alexandria Elementary before becoming Calhoun County's first supervisor of instruction for K-12. Mrs.

McCullars received several awards in her lifetime, including Outstanding Young Woman of America, Outstanding Teacher of America and other state and local awards. She graduated from Jacksonville State University where she was the university's first homecoming queen. Mrs. McCullars was a life member of the 'Oak Bowery Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School until recently. For the past three years, she had sponsored and paid for Whitt Hibbs, pastor for the church, to go to Honduras on a weeklong medical mission.

"She was a very generous lady with what the Lord had blessed her with," Hibbs said. Jennifer Ginsberg covers education for The Star. Pallbearers will be Scott Tollison, Scottie Ramsey, Glenn Ramsey, Dewayne Todd Michael Joiner, Frankie Hawkins, Lynn Shipman, Ricky Holmes and Thomas Hambright.

Mr. Isbell was born in Birmingham and had lived in Riverside most of his life. He was a Baptist. Koho Funeral Home with Elder Daniel Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Zion's Rest Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke.

The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial services will be Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at Sharon Church in Lake, Miss.

Mrs. Lewis died Monday at her home. Survivors include her husband, Daniel E. Lewis. of Roanoke; a son, Kevin S.

Lewis of Roanoke; and a sister, Rachel Miller of Collinsville, Miss. A Roanoke resident since 1990, Mrs. Lewis was a native of Newton, and the daughter of the late Curtis Eugene and Maudie Mildred Shoemaker Ward. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion's Rest Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Rhonda Kim and Karen Leah; and two sisters, Mildred Carol Ward and Mary Joan Felton.

DELTA Services for Misty Nicole Barnwell, 14, of Delta will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Liberty Hill Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin.

Miss Barnwell died Monday at Regional Medical Center. Cantrell OXFORD Services for Ralph E. Cantrell of Oxford will be announced by Miller Funeral Home. Mr. Cantrell died Monday at Regional Medical Center.

Evans Services for Elisah Evans, 50, of Anniston will be announced by Ervin Funeral Chapel. Mr. Evans died Tuesday at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital. Garner ALEXANDRIA Services for Willie Sasnett Garner, 85, of Alexandria will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Alexandria Valley Church of God with Rev.

David L. Duke officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at Chapel Hill Funeral Home.

Mrs. Garner died Tuesday at her home. Survivors include her husband, Elvyn B. Garner of Alexandria; four daughters and their husbands, Doris Moon Bonds and Virgil Bonds of Anniston, Katherine McNeely of Ohatchee, Sylvia and Art Hilliker of Mississippi and Karon and David Lambert of Alexandria; three sons and their wives, Ray and Penny Estes of California and Gerald and Elaine Estes and Ronnie and Debra Estes, all of Alexandria; a stepdaughter and her husband, Bobbie and Bob Ridley of Georgia; a stepson and his wife, Roger and Brenda Garner of Georgia; a sister, Mecy Batson of Jacksonville; 20. grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, four eight great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews Pallbearers will be Billy Terry Estes, Andy Lambert, Timothy Erwin, Jesse Lambert and Lee Stern.

Mrs. Garner was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun' County. She was a charter member of the Church of God and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dalton A. Estes; a sister, Clara Gardner; a brother, Calvin Sasnett; and her parents, William and Lillie Mae Sasnett.

Isbell RIVERSIDE Services for Michael Ray Isbell, 45, of Riverside will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Pell City with Rev. Ray Speakman officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Memorial Gardens.

House had lived in Calhoun County most of her life. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Fred L. House; her parents and two sisters. PHILOMATH, Ore.

Idoll Bama Koho, 65, of Philomath, formerly of Anniston, died Thursday. Survivors include her husband, Don Koho; three children, Melinda Taylor of Albany, Tony Smith of Springfield and Rod Smith of Ashland; three brothers, Bud Hicks of Pineville, Ray Hicks of White City and Jerry Hicks of Central Point; five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Koho was born in Los Angeles and is the daughter of Carl Lindsey and Georgia Stallings Hicks. She worked for 30 years in the same building which started as Mutual Produce, then was sold to Fir Crest Farms, and was finally sold to Foster Farms.

Lambert Services for Kathryn I. Lambert, 81, of Anniston will be Thursday: at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home with Revs. Edward Heptinstall and Bob Ford officiating. Burial will be in Forestlawn Gardens.

The family will receive friends 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Mrs. Lambert died Tuesday at Regional Medical Center. Survivors include a daughter, Sue Wells of Anniston; two sisters; Fran Blankenship of Birmingham and Virginia Souza of Benica, five grandchildren and their spouses, Donna Wells Matson and Shawn Matson, Leigh Anne McClellen Monday and Mike Monday, Debbie McClellen, Chet and Janice McClellen, and Al and Kayla McClellen; six greatgrandchildren, two stepgreatgrandchildren, and six nephews. Pallbearers will be Mike Monday, Mark Monday, John Triplett, Shawn Matson, Paul Blankenship and Phil Blankenship.

Mrs. Lambert was a native of Albertville and had been a retired dental hygienist. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Anniston and a member of Blue Mountain Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester G. Lambert.

She had been a Sunday school teacher. Lewis ROANOKE Services for Susan Lewis, 54, of Roanoke will be Saturday Anniston Funeral Service. Mr. Lytle died Tuesday in Odenville. Messer Services for Martha Lee Messer, 77, of Woodland will be today at 11 a.m.

Messer died Monday at her home. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jean Traylor of LaGrange, and Pat Laney of Ranburne; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a great-greatgrandchild. Pallbearers will be Steve Sears, Brad Laney, Jamie Traylor, Chris Perry, Bradley Dale, Kenneth Messer and Terry Messer. A native of Cullman County, Mrs. Messer was the daughter of the late Mitchell and Bessie Brown Gay.

She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and the Woodland Senior Citizens Group. She had been employed, by LaMar Manufacturing Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Milton "Hop" Messer; a daughter, Judy Perry; and a grandchild, Thomas Snyder. Minnifield Services for Mildred Minnifield, 82, of Anniston will be Thursday at noon at Anniston Funeral Service with Rev. Wayne Davis officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Siani Cemetery in Alexander City. The body will be at the chapel an hour prior to services. Mrs. Minnifield died Saturday at Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Faye Gregory of Anniston and Carrie Brown of Charleston, S.C.; an adopted daughter, Ella S. Copeland of Anniston; a son, John Minnifield of Anniston; two grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
