B.49 By Genoa Boykins Star Staff Writer TALLADEGA With crime among youths on an increase, one Talladega area resident was determined to make a difference. Since high school, Vanessa Brooks Porter dreamed of becoming a juvenile corrections officer. On the trail of her dream, Mrs. Porter ran into an insurmountable obstacle. During a routine physical for Jacksonville State University Police Academy, physicians diagnosed heart disease.

Chasing her dream came to an abrupt halt. On Feb. 26 just days after completing the necessary tests for a heart and lung transplant, Mrs. Porter died. She was 30.
