Birmingham picks Mexico TUSCALOOSA A variety of events has been scheduled to celebrate Tuscaloosa County's 11th annual Heritage Week April 5-12. This year the event, sponsored by the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the opening of the University of Alabama.

Special ceremonies marking the inauguration of the first president will be April 12 at the site of Alabama's state capitol erected in 1831. Among the special attractions will be a performance by the Ballet Folklorico, the national ballet of Mexico, April 1 at 8 p.m. at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center concert hall. Mexico's highly acclaimed conductor, Enrique Batiz, will conduct the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in a tribute to his homeland at 8 p.m. April 2- 3.

In addition, there will be Mexican fiestas each day April 3- 12 at Boutweil Auditorium. Flower and Art Show set for this spring. Among the craftsmen needed are a glass cutter, lye soap maker, woodcarver, potter, feather flower maker, flower petal jam maker, cooper, sheep shearer, beekeeper, book binder and blacksmiths.
