FEOERAL NATINAL MORTGAGE ASSOCIATION, TRANSFEREE Longshore, Jr. LONGSHORE, EVANS A LONGSHORE Attorney for Transferee 1900 City Federal Building Birmingham, Alabama 35203 Phone: 70S-7S7-7661 June 8, 15, 77, 1988 Protection Agency ifeKAi sets drinking water standards and has determined that lead is health concern at certain levels of exposure. There is currently a standard of 0.05 parts per million (ppm) which has been adopted by ADEM. Based on new health information, EPA is likely to lower this standard significantly. EPA and others are concerned about lead in drinking water.

Too much lead in the human body can cause serious damage to the brain, kidneys, nervous system, and red blood cells. The greatest risk even with short-term exposure Is to young children and pregnant women. Although some lead may be obtained from drinking water, the majority of the lead you are exposed to comes from air and from food. Lead levels in your drinking water are iikely to be highest: If your home or water system has lead pipes, or if your home has copper pipes with lead solder, and if the heme is less than five years old, or if you have soft or acidic water, or if water sits In the pipes for several hours. Although the water furnished by this system meets ADEM standards for lead, contamination caused by the water reacting with lead piping or lead solder in copper plumbing mayy occur.

Lead pipes have not been used in plumbing or In water systems for many years. Lead pipe are soft, malleable, and shine when scratched with sharp metal. You should determine If your house has lead plumbing and if so, have a chemical laboratory test a sample of water for lead. If your home plumbing system contains copper pipe, there Is a strong probability that lead solder was used In connecting these fittings. Testing of the water is the only way to be sure of the amount of lead which might be In your water and this is especially Important to apartment dwellers because flushing may not be effective in multi-family buildings.

Even with lead solder in copper plumbing or lead plumbing, there are measures you may take to avoid consuming water containing increased amounts of lead: 1. Use only the cold water tap for food preparation especially baby formula. 2. Ensure that future plumbing installation or repair Is performed using lead-free solder. 3.

Instead of using water for drinking or tor cooking that has boon in plumbing overnight, use the water tor other activities such at washing dishes or taking a shower. 4. Hot water dissolves lead at a more rapid rate than cold water and therefore hot water should not be used for consumption nor for cooking. This notice meets the requirements established by EPA which is required by Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Additional information Is available in a pamphlet which may be obtained tree of charge from our office.

The museum will use the grant for development of a new full-time position and for the continuing expansion of educational services for both adults and children, a museum official said Museum director Christopher Reich said Tuesday the museum will establish a development office, which will work with the museum board and the director The development officer will be responsible for grant writing, fund-raising events and the managing of capital campaigns, he said. Although the museum can apply for grants from several different agencies. Reich said, "We just don't have the time or the expertise to apply for as many grants as we'd like Last year's grant was used to hire two additional employees to help with the educational programs at the museum. Reich said.

Reich said the grant is "a prestigious award." Of 1,311 applications, only 402 museums received the award. Only two other museums in Alabama received the grant, which is based on 10 percent of a museum's annual operational revenues. "It's one of very few grants given for general operations," Reich said. "Most are tied to special projects or special exhibits." The grant funds are intended "to initiate new projects to help museums serve their community better," Reich said, not to replace existing or anticipated sources of local revenue and support.
