Mr. Harwell was a member and Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church, where he also served as a member of the administrative board and board of stewards. Mr. Harwell was the rationing administrator of Talladega County during World War and served as Two couples are temporary millionaires Tha Associated Praaa INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Samuel and Virginia Rice of Fort Wayne Just about lost it when they received their state income tax refund. More than 100 miles away in Indianapolis, Jinunie and Linda Adams were feeling the same way.

The two couples 'weren't feeling the run-of-the-mill taxpayer blues. Instead, they were downright delirious with excitment. The Rices had expected an $82 tax refund from the state. When a check arrived in the mail Thursday, it was made out for 88,202,416.48. "I looked at that thing, and I started reading all those numbers.

My heart just about jumped out of my chest," Rice said. The Adamses felt the same way when their check for 88,202,182.71 arrived. They had been expecting 8300. "I had to count the commas to figure how much it was for. Then I screamed and yelled eight million dollars!" said Mrs.

Adams, 35, a preschool teacher. The Adams family made out a wish list on how such a sum could be spent, and Rice, too, couldn't help fantasizing about what 88 million-plus could buy. "I've wanted to get out of the city for a long time," said Rice, S3. "I'd maybe buy some good ground in the country and build something." But such thoughts were dashed when a nervous tax department employee knocked pn the door, asking Rice if the state could please have Its check back. "He said it didn't matter, that they'd already stopped payment on It," Rice said.

Larry McKee, a spokesman for the Bureau of Internal Revenue, said he believes the checks are the biggest errors made by the department In years. He blamed a combination of computer and human error. "I was going to turn It in anyway. But It sure felt good for 3Vi hours," said Rice, who kept a photocopy of the check for a souvenir. Mrs.

Adams agreed. "I figured they wouldn't cash the check, and I knew we weren't millionaires," she said. "But it sure was fun and exciting for a while."
